Bus fare can be paid by purchasing an “akbil” (6 TL deposit) or an Istanbul Card (10 TL deposit) from an authorized merchant near many bus stops. Both Akbils and Istanbul Cards can be refilled at the automated machines at some bus, metro, and tramway stops. They cannot be purchased on board the bus or in metro stations (the yellow Istanbul Card vending machines are not yet in service and can only dispense subway tokens). Both akbils and Istanbul Cards can be used on buses, underground metro, funiculars, tramways, and ferries.
